CADIZ — The Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers launched a brand new fundraiser referred to as “Love Bites” that can finish on Feb. 14.
People can donate any quantity of money to the pound, and the Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers will write the primary identify of an ex or different person on a small plastic hearth hydrant.
“Then we let the dogs do what they want, and hopefully, they pee,” Cindi Yanez, canine warden and president of the Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers, stated.
“It doesn’t have to be an ex, but it’s Valentine’s Day so we thought that would be OK, but if you have someone you just don’t like and you would love to see them peed on, it could be that person,” Yanez stated.
The fundraiser began about two weeks in the past, and Yanez stated the organization has raised practically $300 to this point.
“The average net bill per healthy dog when all they need is their vaccines and to be spayed or neutered is $500. Sometimes it’s a little less. Sometimes it’s a lot more,” Yanez stated.
Yanez defined that the canine pound is a county facility, however the Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers is a nonprofit that raises money for the dogs’ vet payments. She stated the county doesn’t cowl vet payments, vaccines, flea and tick therapy or spaying or neutering the dogs.
“The adoption fee is only $40 because the county doesn’t pay for any of that. So you pay 40 bucks, you get a dog, and that’s all you get. You do get a tag if you live in the county, but that’s it. About 10 years ago, a couple of us thought that was really irresponsible, so we created the Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers,” Yanez stated.
Yanez stated that neighboring counties have a lot increased adoption charges, which embody vaccines and spaying or neutering the adopted canine.
“Belmont charges like $125, but you get a vetted dog. Jefferson charges $190, but you get a vetted dog,” she stated.
Yanez stated when she began working on the canine pound in 2014, the adoption payment in Harrison County was $45 and has since decreased to $40.
“Vet care has at least doubled in that time period,” she stated.
She stated the adoption charges go to the county, so all the funding for the Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers comes by means of donations and fundraisers. Yanez stated that the canine pound is consistently fundraising and developing with new concepts for fundraisers to assist cowl vet payments.
According to Yanez, the organization pays for all “preventive and emergency medical care.” She stated this contains testing for heartworm and Lyme illness and therapy if the exams come again optimistic. It additionally contains spaying or neutering the canine, rabies vaccines and the primary and second DHLPPC vaccines, which stands for distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus.
