Emergency authorities reacted to the Monschein’s home around 11:15 a.m. Saturday after reports of a 65-year-old man who was assaulted by a bear in his backyard, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said.
Paul Copleman, DEEP’s representative, said the bear was drawn in to a bird feeder on the property. A dog identified the bear and began to pursue the animal, he said.
Monschein said the bear just assaulted as soon as Cooper began running towards the animal. She said the bear assaulted to protect itself and its possible cubs.
