SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Shelby County Schools is getting a brand new facility canine for the Linda Nolen Learning Center.
The concept is to offer a professionally skilled service canine to help individuals with disabilities.
The Linda Nolen Learning Center has college students with emotional, bodily, sensory and behavioral wants.
The aim is to introduce a brand new modern manner that may hopefully assist the scholars self-regulate what they’re feeling.
Abigail Witthauer, the founding father of the nonprofit Roverchase, was contacted by the varsity system about inserting a full-time facility canine on the middle.
“We began coming and visiting the Linda Nolen learning center about a year ago,” mentioned Witthauer.

Molly Parks, assistant principal and full-time handler, mentioned the middle will obtain their facility canine in May after coaching wraps up and the canine may even go to different faculties within the district.
“We are going to work with students without disabilities, those that have experienced some trauma recently. We hope that we can bring the dog in to provide some comfort in that time of need,” Parks mentioned.
During the power dogs’ time on the middle, the employees will collect knowledge to indicate how profitable having one is for the scholars.
“Once we have collected that data, we hope to propose that maybe we reach more into the district and other zones that might be interested in having a dog as well in their schools,” Parks mentioned.
