Social media apps like Instagram and TikTok have gotten the “wild west” of puppy promoting by unscrupulous breeders, the Kennel Club has warned.

Well-meaning homeowners are being deceived by pictures on-line, the charity mentioned, which is driving up demand by creating traits for cute-looking puppies.

But the inherent well being issues of many breeds, particularly the flat-faced dogs reminiscent of pugs and French bulldogs, are being exaggerated by intense breeding and poor care.

Half of all dogs bought at the moment are influenced by content material seen on social media, evaluation by the Kennel Club has discovered, and unscrupulous puppy farms are cashing in on digital fads to dupe well-meaning canine patrons.

A survey run by the Kennel Club discovered 1 / 4 of all dogs sold on social media will die or be sick by their first birthday because of poor circumstances and breeding malpractice. A 3rd of on-line dogs are from puppy farms, they estimate, the place malnutrition, abuse and parasites are rife.

However, the proportion of dogs bought on social media has doubled within the final 5 years, partly fuelled by lockdowns making in-person visits unattainable and a few unhealthy practices remaining in place.

‘Unscrupulous breeders’ have ‘easy access to a mass market’

“In today’s carefully curated digital world, enticing photos are the lifeblood of social media and pictures of puppies grab attention – so there is an obvious appeal to buying and selling puppies using these platforms,” Mark Beazley, Chief Executive at The Kennel Club, instructed The Telegraph.

“But if people forget that behind every cute photo on social media, there is a real puppy, and a real need to ensure that their health and welfare has been prioritised, then there can be truly devastating consequences.

“Platforms like Instagram and TikTok can give unscrupulous breeders easy access to a mass market, where they are selling pups with little scrutiny, so it’s down to the puppy buyer to make sure that they ask the right questions, see the puppy, with their mum and in their home environment, and step back if things don’t feel right.

“Failing to do so can lead to a world of heartache for puppy buyers and keeps rogue breeders in business, whilst puppies continue to suffer the consequences, as this research shows.”

The Kennel Club has launched the “Puppywise” marketing campaign to make sure persons are as well-prepared as attainable to ensure they’re solely shopping for from accountable breeders.

Key recommendation for homeowners is to ensure they see the puppies with their mom, and of their home house, ideally greater than as soon as.

Asking for documentation, a sale receipt and well being information is an effective option to weed out rogue sellers, consultants say, and by no means decide up a canine from a impartial location or settle for supply with out seeing the animal first.
