‘Ignorance is not any defence’ – 20-year-old Tipperary man fined for docking tails of puppies

A 20-year-old Tipperary man has been convicted and fined for docking the tails of six Terrier puppies. 

According to the ISPCA (Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), the person reportedly admitted to the offence at Cashel District Court this month (October 2023). 

The follow is opposite to the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 and the related Prohibition on Tail Docking and Dew Claw Removal Regulations (Dogs) 2014. 

Evidence was reportedly supplied by ISPCA Senior Inspector, Alice Lacey, who described calling to the defendant’s home in November 2022 and viewing a variety of dogs together with the six docked puppies. 

The 20-year-old reportedly claimed that he thought it was authorized as they had been looking dogs. 

The puppies have since been surrendered into the care of the ISPCA. 

After listening to an apology from the defendant, the Judge imposed a €500 superb and ordered the defendant to pay authorized and veterinary prices of €1535.68. 

Inspector Lacey commented, stating, “The act of interfering with the tender tissue and bone construction of a canine is a particularly merciless and pointless mutilation. 

“Dogs weren’t born with tails to have them eliminated at delivery – they serve a objective and are essential for sustaining steadiness and in addition communication with people, animals and different dogs. Thankfully, all 6 puppies on this case went on to seek out new and loving properties.” 

According to the ISPCA, inspectors proceed to take possession of puppies whose tails have been docked by laypeople regardless of its criminalisation in 2014.  

Eleven puppies have been eliminated by ISPCA inspectors nationwide simply prior to now two weeks. 

ISPCA Chief Inspector Conor Dowling additionally commented and mentioned, “This is a well timed alternative to remind the general public that the docking of the tails of dogs by a layperson is illegitimate and perpetrators can face prosecution for animal cruelty.
