FRANKENMUTH, MI – Hundreds of dogs and their owners converged on Frankenmuth this Saturday, May 27, for the 17th annual Frankenmuth Dog Bowl.
The Dog Bowl is touted as the world’s largest Olympic-style festival for dogs. Events taking place throughout the weekend include dock and disc dog competitions, sheep herding demonstrations, balloon glows and flights, wiener dog races and a pet costume parade.
The events are spread out across 25 acres of the Bavarian Inn’s property leaving plenty of space for dogs and owners to enjoy themselves.
Misty Yohannan from Flint and her Mudi Toy Aussie Miss Stevee competed in the Skyhounds classic qualifier in the micro dogs division. The Skyhounds classic qualifier is a competition where dogs and their owners see how far and how many times they can catch a frisbee in a set amount of time.
“I’ve been doing the sport for 13 years. You get a lot of bounding, you meet a lot of new people, it’s always a lot of fun,” Misty Yohannan said.
The event takes place next to the Frankenmuth River Place Shops, a German-themed outdoor shopping mall with more than 40 shops and attractions located at 925 S. Main. There is also an entire pet-themed vendor marketplace at the event.
According to the events website all dogs are welcome, but they must be on a leash.
Parking is also free and located around the German-styled shopping complex and along Weiss Street.
The Dog Bowl also continues tomorrow, Sunday, May 28.
