More than 5,300 U.S. Postal Service employees were bitten by dogs in the United States in 2015, the mail provider announced Thursday in an effort to promote dog-bite avoidance.

The USPS released its yearly dog bite ranking ahead of National Dog Bite Awareness Week, June 4-10.

Houston ranked worst in the country for dog bites to letters providers with 57 canine attacks.

That was 9 more than second-place Los Angeles.

Dallas handled 44 bites. No. 4, Cleveland, taped 43 bites in financial 2022, followed by 39 in San Diego and 36 in Chicago.

Next came St. Louis, 34; Kansas City, 33; Phoenix and San Antonio connected at 32 each.

“When our mail carriers are bitten, it is usually a ‘good dog’ that had not previously behaved in a menacing way,” USPS Occupational Safety and Health Senior Director Linda DeCarlo said in a press release.

According to the USPS, these are the leading 10 states where postal employees were assaulted by dogs in 2022, with the leader, California, tape-recording an overall of 675 events — a boost of 19 attacks from 2021. In No. 2, Texas, there were 404 bites — a boost of 36 attacks from 2021.

“When letter carriers deliver mail in our communities, dogs that are not secured or leashed can become a nemesis and unpredictable and attack,” Leeann Theriault, USPS worker safety and health awareness supervisor, said in the release

Some pointers recommended by USPS consist of:

Most individuals understand the approximate time their letter provider shows up every day. Securing your dog prior to the provider approaches your property will decrease any possibly hazardous interactions.

When a letter provider concerns your home, keep dogs:

  • Inside your home or behind a fence;

  • Away from the door or in another room; or

  • On a leash.
