July 4 (Reuters) – Reigning champ of the yearly U.S. Fourth of July hotdog consuming contest Joey Chestnut protected his title on Tuesday, clinching his 16th profession win by scarfing down 62 franks in 10 minutes.
A thunderstorm hold-up at the scene of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating contest at New York City’s Coney Island did not appear to faze Chestnut, 39, who comes from Indiana.
The 2nd location males’s finisher, Geoff Esper of Oxford, Massachusetts, was far behind with 49 hot dogs taken in.
Chestnut disappointed besting his world record – 76 hot dogs – which he attained in 2021. But he said he prepared to press his body to brand-new limitations in the future.
“Today things obstructed, however I’ll be returning,” he informed ESPN.
Earlier in the day New York City native Miki Sudo won the ladies’s competitors for the ninth time by consuming 39.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes. She set the ladies’s world record in 2020 with 48.5 hot dogs.
The conventional 10-minute contest, a carnival-like phenomenon transmitted on ESPN, started in 1980 when the winning dog-eaters connected with 9 franks. Chestnut, by contrast, generally consumes 9 hot dogs in less than a minute.
