PEORIA (25News Now) – The Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved capturing in Peoria early Sunday morning, Dec. 10, that injured a woman and an officer, and killed a dog.
Peoria Police officers mentioned they have been responding to a name of a person refusing to depart a home on South Griswold round 5:20 a.m. when the canine contained in the home attacked them.
Police mentioned two officers fired their weapons on the aggressive canine to cease the attack, resulting in the animal’s dying.
Brian Fengel, the director of the Central Illinois Police Training Center, mentioned Peoria Police encounter aggressive, protecting dogs on a regular basis. He defined nobody desires to harm dogs, however police will shield themselves when dealing with a vicious animal.
“Any dog can be aggressive, if provoked or whatnot,” Fengel mentioned. “Anytime you’re a dog owner you do have a responsibility to keep your dog tied up.”
Fengel mentioned there are methods to maintain each officers and dogs secure when police are known as to the home.
“You can always let dispatch know that you have this animal, that, hey, if the police get called here, you know, just be aware that we have a dog and we’ll put the dog up before you arrive,” Fengel mentioned.

“You have to watch them very closely…because you are the owner, you are responsible,” Fengel mentioned. “You can’t just let dogs run loose and not supervise them.”
