TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — A person who fell by way of the ice on a frozen Michigan lake was rescued after a quick-thinking state police officer used the stranded man’s canine to get rescue gear to him and pull the person to security.
Bystanders known as 911 on Jan. 18 after the 65-year-old man fell by way of ice-covered Arbutus Lake, police stated.
The physique digital camera worn by officer Kammeron Bennetts captured the rescue, initially exhibiting the person trapped in frigid waters with simply his head and shoulders above the skinny ice, and his canine standing at his facet.
Bennetts first tried to throw a rescue disc tethered to a rope out to the person. When that failed, Bennetts requested the person to ship his canine Ruby to him.
“Ruby come right here! Come right here Ruby!” Bennetts shouted within the video earlier than whistling for the canine, which ran to him and arrived tail wagging.
The officer tied the rescue disc to the canine’s collar and requested the person to name Ruby again to him. When she returned to her proprietor, the person took the disc from Ruby and rescuers pulled him onto safer ice close to the lake’s edge. Bennetts and a neighborhood firefighter then grabbed the person’s arms to finish the rescue, with Ruby nonetheless hooked up to the rope.
The man was taken to a hospital and later launched. Ruby gained reward in a post on X.
