A grandmother who suffered “life-threatening injuries” after being savaged by a dog at her home has died.

The family of Shirley Patrick, 83, had hoped the pensioner she would pull through, following the attack in Caerphilly, south Wales, on 3 December.

But police in Wales have now announced that Mrs Patrick has died – 17 days after the attack.

The dog, a large black XL bully cross cane corso breed, was seized by officers and has been destroyed.

A 55-year-old man – believed to be her son Paul – was taken to hospital with minor injuries but has since been released.

Neighbours said “all hell broke loose” in the house at the time of the incident, prompting specially trained firearms officers, police and paramedics to attend.

Mrs Patrick’s grandson had run a dog-walking business called Leeondogs from the house but had moved out before the tragedy.

Four people who were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury have been released under conditional bail.

Police say their investigation continues and officers will be making further enquiries in the local area.

Detective chief inspector Matthew Sedgebeer said: “If you have concerns or any information regarding this dog and its previous behaviour then please do stop and talk with us.”

The tragedy was just half a mile from a house where 10-year-old Jack Lis was killed by another dog a year ago.
