Gov. Greg Abbott, selecting hardball politics over good governance and management, started a retaliatory veto spree as he killed 77 costs prior to a Sunday due date recently. Even long time state federal government watchers appeared bewildered by the growing standoff in between Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and how it may play out from here.

Abbott, outraged that real estate tax relief legislation he desired was not gone by Patrick and the Senate, required an instant unique session and provided his risk to carry out mass vetoes of costs passed in the 88th session of the Legislature. When Patrick and the Senate did not right away serve as directed, Abbott made great on his risk, wielding his veto pen like a damaging ball and leaving a lot of civilian casualties in his wake.

Abbott’s veto of House Bill 4759 struck me as especially terrible and insensitive. I question how widow Janie Najera, 75, took the news recently that Abbott banned what was much better called the Ramon Najera Act in remembrance of her spouse, an 81-year-old Air Force veteran who was fatally trampled by 2 let loose pit bull blends on a Westside street in February.
