Foster dog conserves sleeping family of 5 from houseboat fire

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WTKR) – A Virginia family of 5 is calling their foster dog a hero for conserving them from a marina fire that destroyed numerous boats, including their houseboat.

Christopher Cushna, Shiela Janes and their kids took in a Great Pyrenees called Moose, or Moosie, as part of the Portsmouth Humane Society’s program “Paws Around Portsmouth.” The program sets neighborhood members with a shelter dog for a “field trip” that can last a couple of hours or a couple of days.

“What I like to think about is we saved Moose from the situation Moose was in, and Moose definitely saved us on the boat,” Cushna said.

The family revealed Moose around town last Saturday, marketing that the dog required a permanently home. Cushna says they fulfilled a possible owner at the marketplace, however she couldn’t adopt Moose that day.

So, the family brought Moose to their houseboat at the Tidewater Yacht Marina then went to sleep. Their unforeseen night with Moose was important, Cushna says.

As the family slept, the boat in the slip beside theirs ignited early Sunday. The flames were infecting their boat.

Moose got up early and woke the family up, too. They saw smoke rippling from the surrounding boat and had the ability to make their method past the burning boat to safety.

“If Moose was not there, at the very least, it would have been an emergency evacuation. I could have seen us having to dive into the waters. And it would have surprised us, too. What Moose was able to do was eliminate the surprise,” Cushna said.

The family lost their houseboat, however they state Moose saved their lives. Just 3 hours after the fire, the dog was embraced by the individual they fulfilled at the marketplace.

The family says they wish to foster once again in the future, while Moose is getting great deals of love at his brand-new home.

As the neighborhood comes together to help those affected by the fire, the Portsmouth Olde Towne Farmers Market has set up a GoFundMe for the family of 5.
