Saline County, Neb. – Damning reports simply launched by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reveal that dogs struggled with obviously contaminated eyes and puppies were kept in harmful enclosures at Shaw Chinese Crested & Miniature Pinschers, an operation that produces dogs for sale near Wilber and is run by Peggy Shaw. In action, PETA hurried a letter to Saline County Attorney David Solheim asking him to examine the center—which boundaries roughly 170 animals—and submit relevant charges versus those accountable for the overlook.

According to the most recent report, on July 5 a dog was discovered squinting with a “glob” of discharge in the external corner of the ideal eye in addition to curling toe nails that were so long that they impacted the animal’s capability to walk. On June 16, a USDA inspector saw another dog “constantly squinting” her ideal eye, which seemed blueish, hazy, and giving off “excessive” green discharge. The inspector likewise recorded that 32 puppies were restricted on slatted floor covering that their feet slipped through which 4 other dogs were exposed to “sharp” and “protruding points” in an enclosure.

“Allowing dogs to languish with oozing eyes and keeping puppies in perilous enclosures are standard practice in miserable mills like this one, where animals are treated as nothing but commodities,” says PETA Vice President of Evidence Analysis Daniel Paden. “PETA is calling on Saline County authorities to prosecute those responsible for this neglect and urges everyone never to buy any animal from a breeder or pet store and to adopt from shelters instead.”

PETA is pursuing charges under state law due to the fact that the USDA doesn’t render relief or help to animals throughout its examinations and these infractions bring no federal criminal or civil charges.

PETA—whose slogan checks out, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more info, please see PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

PETA’s letter to Solheim follows.

August 21, 2023

The Honorable David Solheim

Saline County Attorney

Dear Mr. Solheim:

I hope this letter discovers you well. I’m composing to demand that your workplace (and the correct law-enforcement company, as you consider suitable) examine and, as ideal, file criminal charges versus those accountable for disregarding dogs at Shaw Chinese Crested & Miniature Pinschers, a breeding center run by Peggy Shaw at 1735 County Rd. 2100 near Wilber. PETA hopes private investigators will go to the center with a vet who has know-how in canine health and well-being so that they can determine any animals in requirement of care and opine on the conditions of and for the roughly 170 animals there.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors recorded overlook at the center in the connected reports, which were simply revealed. On June 16, an inspector discovered that a person of Shaw’s dogs was “constantly squinting” her ideal eye, which was “blueish and hazy” and giving off “excessive” green discharge. While Shaw declared a vet had actually taken a look at the dog, “no documentation [was] provided upon request” to the inspector. The exact same day, 32 puppies were discovered restricted on slatted floor covering, which their feet were travelling through, and 4 other dogs were exposed to “sharp” and “protruding points” on a panel planned to avoid them from digging out of an enclosure.

On July 5, another dog was discovered “squinting with a glob of whitish colored discharge in the outer corner of the right eye,” in which an imprint the size of a ballpoint pen was discovered. The exact same dog’s “toenails … were long with at least one of them curving around causing the toe to splay to the side while walking.”

These findings might break the state’s animal overlook statute, Nebraska Revised Statute § 28-1009, which restricts recklessly stopping working to supply care as is fairly needed for an animal’s health. The USDA renders no help or relief whatsoever to animals on website, and these reports bring no criminal or civil charges and don’t preempt criminal liability under state law for disregarding animals. If you’d like to learn more about the USDA’s findings, please see the contact info for its workplace in Riverdale, Maryland, here.

Thank you for your time and factor to consider.

Sincerely,

Daniel Paden

Vice President of Evidence Analysis
