An elderly Northland girl has been attacked and killed by a canine this afternoon.

A member of the family on the scene within the city of Moerewa has instructed RNZ his aunt has been killed.

He stated the girl had been hanging out washing when a canine got here onto the property and attacked her.

It is known two different individuals had been injured. Ambulances had been seen leaving the property and there are nonetheless three police vehicles there.

It is believed the canine was shot by a neighbour earlier than officers arrived.

Police appearing Senior Sergeant James Calvert stated the sufferer was an elderly girl.

Police had been alerted to the attack about 4.40pm, he stated.

“Upon arrival, a person was located deceased. A scene examination is currently being undertaken.

“We can confirm there is no risk to the public in relation to this incident.”

He confirmed the canine had been killed.

The two injured individuals had been taken to Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa.

The demise has been referred to the coroner.
