U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Mike Alcala and his former army working canine, John, had been separated for over two years. As the 10-year-old German shepherd prepares for retirement, American Humane shocked the canine and his handler with a pre-holiday reunion in San Antonio, Texas.
During the three years that Alcala was John’s handler, the 2 shaped a powerful bond. They had been separated in September 2021 when Alcala was reassigned to a different base.

When Alcala heard that John was retiring, he reached out to the nonprofit organization American Humane for assist in transporting his greatest good friend home for adoption.

During the emotional reunion on Dec. 20, Alcala and his spouse, Brittany Alcala, launched their 10-month-old daughter to John, the latest member of the household.
