MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI – A person and his canine have been saved from the icy waters of an inland lake Friday night in a rescue that noticed two first responders later handled for hypothermia.
The incident was reported round 4:06 p.m. Friday, April 12, when Marquette County Central Dispatch acquired a name of a person in misery within the waters of Lake Michigamme, about 30 miles west of Marquette.
Marquette County sheriff’s deputies say the person, 56-year-old Michigamme Township resident Thad Cooper, had been searching for the household canine when he observed the canine’s head simply above the floor of the ice, and greater than 100 yards from shore, in Lake Michigamme.
Cooper bought in a kayak and paddled out to the canine to rescue it. But when he reached the canine, he fell out of the kayak and was unable to get again within the kayak or again to shore, deputies mentioned.
