A delivery executive in Hyderabad sustained injuries Sunday afternoon after he fell from the third floor of an apartment building while trying to allegedly save himself from the dog of the customer. This is the second such incident reported in the city since January this year.
The latest incident took place at Srinidhi Heights apartments in Panchavati Colony near Manikonda when Md Ilyas, 32, went to the customer’s house to deliver a mattress she had ordered via an e-commerce portal.
According to the police, the customer’s Labrador came charging at him as the door was open and Illyas jumped over the parapet wall to save himself from the dog. Though the customer and other residents came to his rescue, Illyas slipped and fell, the police said.
Illyas, the police said, is out of danger. He was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. However, the Raidurgam police are yet to register an FIR against the dog owner.
On January 11, a delivery executive for a food aggregator had similarly jumped off the third floor of an apartment to save himself from a raging pet dog. Mohammed Rizwan, 23, succumbed to his injuries a couple of days later. While the Banjara Hills police had registered an FIR against the dog owner, the victim and the accused agreed to a settlement later.
The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has been demanding customers ensure that their dogs are leashed when a delivery executive is expected to arrive. In a press statement, the union’s president Shaik Salauddin demanded action against dog owners for their negligence.
“TGPWU requests dog owners to tie their beloved pets when the delivery agents come to deliver items,” said Salauddin in the statement, adding delivery agents would not know whether their pets were friendly or not, and the same could hold for the pet, who could be reacting to a stranger.
Calling for the sensitisation of dog owners, he said the residents’ welfare associations should also discuss the issue. Appealing to Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao and Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi for action, he said the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) must issue a notice that the dog owner will be punished if such incidents occur.
“His (Illyas) livelihood will be affected by this incident. So, Amazon should pay him at least Rs 1,000 per day. Amazon should make a policy for such incidents. The dog owner should bear the expenses of the treatment,” Salauddin demanded.
