A cygnet has been killed by a canine which was off its lead in a metropolis’s historic gardens.
Bishop’s Palace and Gardens in Wells, Somerset, confirmed Grace the cygnet had died after a “spaniel-type canine” entered the moat on Friday.
It mentioned Grace “put up an incredible effort to combat off the canine and save the opposite cygnets”.
Avon and Somerset Police mentioned the proprietor has been recognized and enquiries have been ongoing.
Writing on Facebook, Bishop’s Palace mentioned: “We are extraordinarily unhappy to report that this morning (Friday), one among our cygnets was killed by a canine getting into the moat.
“Grace put up an incredible effort to combat off the canine and save the opposite cygnets.
“The matter is now with the police and we will likely be unable to remark additional.
“Please maintain dogs on a lead across the moat always.”
Police mentioned the incident occurred at round 10:30 BST on the Grade I web site, which is subsequent door to Wells Cathedral.
