A Culmore Point resident stated he was “absolutely disgusted” by the quantity of canine dust on the realm’s Ardan Road.

The resident, who contacted Derry News, most well-liked to stay nameless. He stated the issue was not a recent one, it had been “going on for a long time”.

He stated: “The Council is doing its greatest to maintain Ardan Road clear. The sweeper lorry goes up there twice per week however as quickly because it does, the dogs come behind and their house owners simply permit them to do their business anyplace.

“I by no means see stray dogs within the space, so it’s someone’s canine. My spouse goes out walking within the night time and I am going out operating within the night time and the canine dust is simply there.

“Dozens of kids walk that street to highschool and you might be always watching the place you might be walking in case you step within the dogs’ dust, which is simply in every single place.

“This is really, really dangerous. There is a roundworm called Toxocara canis found in dogs. Roundworm eggs in dog dirt can easily be picked up by young children and cause stomach upsets, sore throats, asthma and in rare cases blindness. Apparently the eggs can remain active in soil for many years after the dog dirt has disappeared.”

The Culmore resident stated he would attraction to canine house owners to choose up the dust after their dogs.

“There are plenty of dog bins on that road , so there is no excuse,” he added. “It will not be as if there’s nowhere to place it. You may need to hold it a few yards however that’s half and parcel of being a canine proprietor. If somebody doesn’t wish to decide up canine dust, then they shouldn’t have a canine. That’s the best way I see it.

“They ought to make sure that they’ve loads of luggage with them if they’re taking their canine out for a walk. Lift up your canine’s dust in order that no person else stands in it. Don’t depart it for someone else to carry it.

“Ardan Road is not a dirty road, apart from the dogs’ dirt. A while back, someone wrote on the road sign for Ardan Road, ‘Dog Poo Alley’, the problem is so bad. Everyone is constantly complaining about it.”

Speaking to Derry News, Culmore SDLP councillor Catherine McDaid confirmed folks have been always complaining to her concerning the quantity of canine dust within the Ardan Road neighborhood.

Cllr McDaid stated: “I’ve seen there’s a lot of it in Culmore. It is so unsafe. There are bins particularly for canine dust within the space however, sadly, they don’t seem to be getting used. The quantity of canine dust may be very harmful, particularly given there are such a lot of youngsters utilizing the Ardan Road.

“Hollybush Bush Primary School is true in the course of it. There are folks walking up and down to highschool, going up and down on their bikes and with prams after which bringing the canine dust into the home.

“I’ve young youngsters and I’ve misplaced depend of the variety of occasions I’ve introduced the dust on the pram wheel into the home, and that’s the entire home then needing to be scrubbed.

“I do know the Council is doing every part it might probably to attempt to encourage canine house owners to choose up after their pets and up the marketing campaign of consciousness. We had a presentation from the DogsTrust on the Health and Community committee final month.

“We got an update about how it could possibly step in and help. Council is really looking at all options to see how the situation could be improved but it is an issue, it is a problem right across the district.”

Cllr McDaid stated she would encourage canine house owners to be accountable.

“If you take your canine out for a walk, carry the canine’s dust and put it right into a canine bin. Be accountable for the sake of the broader neighborhood.

“I would also appeal to dog owners not to let their pet off the lead for a run because you don’t know where it is going to the toilet then.”
