In 2022, Milwaukee County Parks was pressured to close down the biggest off-leash canine park in within the county.

Called Runway Dog Park, it was closed as a result of it was too near an precise runway. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport was notified by the Federal Aviation Administration that the canine park maintained on its property by Parks violated federal guidelines relating to airport land use.

“Continued use of a dog area on airport property would jeopardize millions of dollars in federal airport funding,” a spokesperson for the airport advised Urban Milwaukee on the time.

The 26-acre canine park was massively fashionable, particularly amongst residents on the south aspect of the county. For 15 years dogs and their homeowners used the park. Now county supervisors from the South Side are pushing the creation of a brand new canine park to exchange it.

Sup. Ryan Clancy has authored a decision that may give Parks $75,000 to plan and design a brand new canine park. County Executive David Crowley‘s 2023 funds already included funding to overview potential websites for a alternative park.

Dog parks are one of many high points Clancy hears about from constituents, he advised Urban Milwaukee. “I probably have 100 constituent contacts over the years about dog parks,” he stated.

Clancy stated there are lots of constituents in his district, which encompasses the southeast nook of the City of Milwaukee, and throughout the county who depend on canine parks for the standard of lifetime of their pets and themselves. “We definitely need to invest more in those things that make a big quality-of-life difference to folks,” Clancy stated. “And there really isn’t any kind of private replacement for that.”

Based on all he’s heard from constituents, Clancy stated he hopes Parks could make one thing “from the ground up” incorporating concepts from frequent canine park customers. The supervisor, who isn’t a canine proprietor, famous that he’s heard that canine parks typically get very muddy from all of the site visitors and should be quickly closed to carry the turf again. The concept to make use of synthetic turf or one thing that may last more has been recommended to him, he stated.

Clancy is joined on the decision by co-sponsorship from two different south aspect supervisors: Juan Miguel Martinez and Steven Shea. The county board’s Finance Committee will think about the decision this month.
