Coronation Street fans remained in bits as a precious Weatherfield character died in heartbreaking scenes. Viewers of the ITV soap were alerted of disturbing scenes as Evelyn Plummer was required to have her relied on greyhound Cerberus put to sleep after he fell seriously ill.
Tragedy struck on the cobbles after, in Monday night’s episode, Evelyn contacts Roy Cropper’s coffee shop with Cerberus in tow. When Cerberus later on revealed no interest in his tea, Evelyn was worried.
With Cerberus still ill in Wednesday night’s instalment, a worried Tyrone Dobbs firmly insisted that he and his gran took him to the veterinarians. When the veterinarian recommended gastrointestinal disorder, a guilty Roy revealed he’d dropped an Eccles cake in the café and feared Cerberus might have consumed it.
Aware that currants are harmful to dogs, a mad and anxious Evelyn, played by Maureen Lipman, informed Roy that if anything occurred to Cerberus, she’d never ever forgive him. The veterinarian then broke the terrible news that Cerberus was struggling with kidney failure.
He said Cerberus was not likely to enhance due his age and the kindest thing would be to put him to sleep and Evelyn lastly concurred, stating “I do not wish to see him suffer.” The typically stoic Evelyn remained in tears as she covered her boy in a blanket and bid farewell to him for the last time. “Thank you for being the very best boy, the prince of Weatherfield,” she said about her ‘biggest buddy’ as the veterinarian administered the injection.

Some fans grumbled that the heartwrenching scenes were ‘excessive.’ @amz07 said: “Aww this is excessive.” And @rattycastle tweeted: “Corrie method excessive revealing the poor dog getting an injection.” @EssexViews exclaimed: “OMG.”
@joy9kat asked: “Do they actually need to reveal this! Totally unneeded.” @nowbigbrother echoed: “There was no requirement for the dog to pass away.” And the Conversation Street Podcast @ConversationStr said: “I’m just making it through these Cerberus scenes by chuckling to myself about how lazy greyhounds are and just how much the dog is most likely taking pleasure in laying around and being cuddled by Maureen Lipman.”
But @jadecjordan1 praised the choice to evaluate this story and welcomed other Twitter users to share images of their own animals in homage. “Pet sorrow never ever gets discussed enough,” they said. “It’s an entire various level of discomfort and heart break. “Honestly I can’t stand the idea of numerous suffering in silence. Show me your children that have actually crossed the rainbow bridge, keep their memory alive – I’ll go initially, my Louis.” And @LaurenStubley said: “Can’t watch this Poor Cerberus. Glad they’re doing this story though.”
