A Cornwall animal rescue charity has appealed to people not to abandon their pets after a mother and her two puppies were abandoned on Christmas Eve.
The National Animal Welfare Trust Cornwall said there is always help out there fir peopke who are struggling highlighting the plight of Evie and her two puppies, one of which died.
Just hours before Christmas Eve, the Cornwall branch was alerted that there was a mum and two puppies which had been abandoned.
They were cold, hungry, underweight and in urgent need of care. Upon arriving at the centre it was clear that mum and pups were in a bad way. All three were covered in fleas, had stomachs swollen with worms, were anaemic and completely drained of energy.

Their energy was so low they couldn’t even lift their heads to feed. During that first night, in the early hours of Christmas Eve, little Murphy one of the pups died as he was simply too weak to carry on.
The second pup (Frankie) then started to “head South” and an emergency trip to the vets for fluids was made. The vets gave him IV fluids and monitored him for the afternoon, while Mum received continuous care from the team.
“Late afternoon little Frankie came back to us, looking a little brighter and ready to snuggle up to his mum,” said a spokesperson from the trust.

“From this point the pup and Mum were monitored through the day and night, being fed every two hours through Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and in to the week.
“Things have been hard and there have been a few times we have doubted whether little Frankie would make it, but we are so proud to say that little one is a fighter, stronger than ever and has even made friends with the kittens in the cattery.
“Mum is also doing really well, she’s very loving, vocal and enjoying her walks with the team for a little time to herself while Frankie plays with the kittens.”
The charity says the moral of this story is, there is never a reason to abandon an animal.
“Charities like ourselves are here to help. If you’re struggling for whatever reason and cannot care for your animal any more we are here, judgement free and ready to help.
“Basic needs such as worming, flea treatment, vaccinations, neutering, food and shelter are essential for any healthy pet, and something which it is so important to consider the cost of before taking on any new pet.

“We have the utmost respect for those who seek our help when they are in need. Life and circumstances change and we understand this. Evie and Frankie’s story could have been so different had someone not found them and brought them to us. Help is here if you need it.”

Once he is of the correct age and strong enough, Frankie will be heading to his new home which has already been found, but Evie will be in need of a loving home.
