Dozens of animal lovers held a candlelit vigil for XL Bully dogs being euthanised after a regulation banning the breed was launched.

Lee Sansum, who organised the vigil final evening and later posted images on TikTok, described it as a ‘sombre and respectful’ event.

The 38-year-old instructed Kent Online: ‘There was a lot of disbelief – we were stood there mourning the death of dogs who didn’t have to die.

‘But it was heartwarming to feel that we have some support from the public – that it’s not simply us bully homeowners on this struggle.

‘Thankfully in this area we’ve had no studies of dogs who’ve been put down, however there are dozens of dogs throughout the UK which were put to sleep.’

It will not be clear what number of dogs have been euthanised thus far, however the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Efra) choose committee heard in October that individuals had already began handing their Bullies to vets and rehoming centres.

Some homeowners had been involved the ban would have an effect on their tenancy settlement and had requested vets to place their pet down, the Guardian reported on the time.

The regulation permits current Bully canine homeowners to maintain their pets, however the dogs should be muzzled when in public, completely neutered and coated by third-party insurance coverage.

All homeowners should be 16 or older and from February 1 have a sound Certificate of Exemption.

On New Year’s Eve one man drove 200 miles to from the West Midlands to Scotland to help rehome dozens of Bullies.

The ban is at present not relevant to Scotland.
