Organizers of the Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races in northern Maine canceled this 12 months’s races on account of lack of snow.
“The forecast has taken a turn for the worst and we are now expecting heavy rain and a period of unseasonably warm weather causing trail conditions to deteriorate rapidly,” organizers wrote in a Facebook post. “The warmth and lack of snow have led us to conclude that moving forward with this year’s race could compromise the well-being of all involved.”
The races had been slated to begin March 1 and run via the weekend in Aroostook County, Maine. According to the occasion’s web site, over 200 volunteers work on the occasion, and 90 sponsors finance it every year.
Since its inception in 1992, reroutes have occurred on account of climate circumstances, however the final outright cancellation occurred in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to News Center Maine, organizers are redirecting their focus towards 2025.
The Can-Am Crown has three races of 250, 100 and 30 miles. Each race this 12 months would have carried completely different first-place money. The 250-mile course has a prize of $5,600, $3,500 for the 100-mile race and $1,500 for the 30-mile course.
