Bury St Edmunds was named runner up within the Most Dog Friendly Town/City class on the DogFriendly Awards 2023 ceremony in London on Wednesday, November 29.
The city was overwhelmed to the highest spot by Girvan, in Scotland, which received Gold with Eastbourne taking bronze.
The awards, that are run by Dog Friendly Magazine and are of their eleventh yr, recognise businesses that go the additional mile to accommodate four-legged mates and the winner of every class is chosen by public vote.
Bury St Edmunds has its personal canine pleasant scheme which was launched 5 years in the past after a collaboration with the city council, Camp Tails Doggy Daycare, Our Bury St Edmunds BID and By St Edmunds and Beyond.
It sees the #dogfriendlybse paw print emblem sticker displayed within the home windows of greater than 100 businesses that welcome canine companions.
Mark Cordell, chief government of Our Bury St Edmunds BID, mentioned: “We are completely delighted to have been shortlisted for this prestigious nationwide award which is recognition of the nice progress the city has made in being a recognised canine pleasant vacation spot since we launched the scheme with the city council 5 years in the past.
“We are grateful for the help we have now obtained from over 100 BID businesses who now warmly welcome dogs and their house owners into their premises.
“I imagine that being a canine pleasant vacation spot encourages extra canine house owners to return into our city centre, keep longer and go to extra businesses, than they might in the event that they needed to depart their canine at home.
“I want to recognise the work of Jon Kay from Camp Tails for his contribution to creating the scheme so successful.”
The awards ceremony was held on the Kennel Club’s headquarters in London.
