BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Spencer the Boston Marathon dog’s parents made another sad announcement on Sunday, just eight days after announcing Spencer’s passing.

Rich and Dorrey Powers shared on social media that Spencer’s niece, 11-year-old Penny, passed away on Saturday.

“To lose two amazing pups in one week is a level of grief we are not prepared to handle. Rest Easy Sweet Penny. You are with your soulmate Spencer with your frisbees and ball. You are forever in our hearts. Thank you all for your caring about this special duo,” Powers wrote on Instagram.

Penny was on a playdate Saturday morning when her owners discovered she was acting off and took her to the veterinarian. It was there they discovered Penny had a tumor on her spleen and was suffering from internal bleeding. The veterinarian found that Penny had hemangiosarcoma tumors that spread to her liver, giving her less than a day to live.

Powers have created a GoFundMe to raise money to find a cure for hemangiosarcoma.

Penny’s passing came just eight days after Spencer died on February 17. Spencer was loved by many as the Boston Marathon dog, cheering on runners with a “Boston Strong” flag for the past nine years.
