A canine behaviourist has dished out the “worst behaved” dog breeds he’s ever worked with.

Will Athertona professional dog trainer from the UKsaid there are two mischievous breeds many pet owners seem buy for all the “wrong reasons”.

As he specialises in working with dogs when “things go terribly wrong”, Will said he meets the family-favourite cocker spaniel and cane corso more than any other breed.

“I see the same breeds cropping up over and over again, displaying the same kinds of negative behaviours,” Will said in his TikTok video.

The first on his list are the “working line” cocker spaniels, best known to be gentle, easy-going, affectionate and highly energetic.

“The working line cocker spaniel is probably the number one breed that people get for the wrong reasons,” Will said.

Originally bred as hunting dogs, their natural instincts to “work” mean they’re extremely active so they enjoy regular walking, running, fetching and playing rather than lazing around the home.

‘Couch potato and Instagram dog’

“(Pet owners) bring this dog that is bred to do a job and work in the field all day and expect it to be a couch potato and Instagram dog,” Will explained.

“And because of that, they display reactivity, barking, pulling, resource guarding and terrible recall.”

The second canine with the worst behaviour is the cane corso, an Italian mastiff dog originally bred to protect.

“Now the cane corso is one of my personal favourite dog breeds on the planet,” Will said.

‘Bad reputation’

“But again, people get them for the wrong reason without the time, dedication or experience required that lead them to have bad reputation of aggressive reactive dogs.”

Many pet owners weighed in on his list of misbehaved dog breeds.

“As a working cocker spaniel owner I agree with what you say, except recall, they are the easiest dogs in the world to train,” one said.

Another added: “This is an eyeopener. I always get mixed breeds. I never expect a dog to be a couch potato.”

However, some suggested the “bad behaving dogs” stemmed from lack of training.

“No such thing as ‘a bad behaved dog’. It’s all in the training,” one said.

‘No such thing as a bad dog’

Another wrote: “No such thing as a bad dog, just clueless owners.”

While one pointed out: “I’m no expert or trainer but I think most the time these dogs get labelled ‘dangerous’ because of bad owners. I’ve had both so-called ‘dangerous’ breeds like Rottweiler and American Pitbull but I made them all into good trustworthy family pets.”

However one suggested: “Yes and no, at times it’s partly that but there’s also the genetics behind it. Any dog can have a good trainer but even a good trainer can’t fully stop genetics from being in play.

“I agree that all dogs have a chance to be well-behaved. When I say ‘genes’, I mean their breed heritage and also their parents’ temperaments.”
