Australia’s top 10 dog breeds announced – so did your favourite take the lead?

Australia’s most popular dog breeds have been announced – with cavoodles proving to be a man’s best friend.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition Australia has compiled the top 10 “trending” dog breeds after analysing Google searches of more than 470 breeds over the past year to uncover the sought-after pedigrees.

Would-be pet owners searched for cavoodles more than any other dog breed in 2022.

The cross-bred canine companion – a mix of a cavalier King Charles spaniel and a toy poodle – took the lead in front of the pack after leaping up from number five with more than 1.3 million searches.

Shiba Inu, a Japanese hunting dog breed known for its spirited personality and fox-like face, landed in second place after climbing from number eight.

Border collie, known for intelligence, perceptiveness and stubbornness, was the third most searched pooch.

The playful dog made an impressive jump into the top 10 with just under one million searches, going from number 21 to the fourth spot.

Interestingly, family favourite golden retriever, known for its sweet and social nature, dropped in search interest – slipping to the fifth spot after being crowned the number one dog breed in 2022.

Dachshund, otherwise known as sausage dogs, made a leap from number 15 to the top 10 – landing in the sixth spot with just over 900,000 searches.

Australian shepherd was the seventh most searched dog breed – making it back into the top 10 after dropping to number 14 last year.

The laid-back French bulldog followed closely behind in eighth spot, followed by the affectionate Labrador retriever and the fearless German shepherd.

The study uncovered the top dog breeds in search demand across Australia between September 2019 and August 2022.

Many of those still searching for a dog are looking to bring home a brand new puppy, with 12.7 million searches related to new dogs in 2022.
