As many as 2,79,335 road dogs have been discovered inside the municipal limits in a survey carried out by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike from July 11 to August 2, it was revealed Wednesday.
The survey was carried to check the impression of the continued Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies Vaccinations (ABC-ARV) programme and to seek out out the neutering share and ward-wise density of stray canine inhabitants.
The survey reveals that there’s a 10 per cent discount within the street-dog inhabitants as in comparison with the earlier survey in 2019, which estimated the road canine inhabitants at 3,10,000.
“At the same time the overall neutering percentage has increased by 20 per cent from the estimated 51.16 per cent in 2019 to 71.85 per cent in the present study. This decline in population points to the effectiveness of intervention efforts aimed at population control and responsible management. This estimate provides a vital snapshot of the street dog population dynamics across eight zones and all the wards within Bengaluru,” the civic physique stated in a launch.

“Rabies is an important public health issue and human-dog conflict in urban areas is something that needs to be controlled. A conducive atmosphere for stray dogs should also be created so that they can cohabit with humans,” BBMP particular commissioner (well being) KV Trilok Chandra stated.
The survey was led by Okay P Suresh, chief scientist (biostatistics) on the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (ICAR-NIVEDI) in Bengaluru.
The Mahadevapura zone with 58,341 road dogs has the most important inhabitants of strays adopted by RR Nagar, with 41,266 strays.
