GARRARD CO., Ky. (WKYT) – The Garrard Co. Animal Shelter has dogs and cats of all sizes and styles, however 5 are pressured to be separated from the pack.
“It’s not something we were expecting, but we have to do what we have to do in order to save as many as we can when it comes down to parvo,” stated Brittany Fain, director of the Garrard Co. Animal Shelter.
According to Fain, the county’s animal management was flagged down by a girl who had six puppies. They have been dewormed, however quickly fell sick with parvovirus. One ended up passing away.
“All you can do when you have a puppy break, you just pray that they pull through because you have a 50/50 shot, depending on how badly they want to fight,” she stated.
After every week keep on the veterinarian stuffed with remedy and parvo remedies, the remaining 5 are on the mend.
However, the shelter is greater than $5,600 within the gap; a cost that Fain stated hits smaller, extra rural shelters onerous.
“We don’t have a budget like a lot of bigger cities and stuff do,” stated Fain. “We run on a very small budget and it’s parvo puppies, I mean it goes fast because it can spread really quickly.”
She stated the latest litter is an instance of how necessary it’s to vaccinate pets, and to spay and neuter them to keep away from unintended liters.
“Every shelter right now is code red. Nobody has room for any puppies. No dogs, cats. Spay and neuter. We do rely on the community to help us try to keep the populations down,” stated Fain.
Fain stated the puppies are anticipated to be in quarantine for an additional couple of weeks.
