Home Secretary Suella Braverman says she is in search of “pressing recommendation” on banning “deadly” American Bully XL dogs.

It comes after one of many dogs attacked an 11-year-old woman in Birmingham on Saturday.

Ms Braverman mentioned the assault was “appalling” and the breed was a specific hazard to youngsters.

West Midlands Police are investigating after the woman was bitten whereas the canine was being walked in Bordesley Green.

The canine was taken to an area vet to be checked over earlier than being transported to safe kennels whereas investigations continued.

And the proprietor of the canine has been spoken to by officers.

After footage of the assault was posted on social media, Ms Braverman wrote on Xpreviously generally known as Twitter: “This is appalling. The American XL Bully is a transparent and deadly hazard to our communities, notably to youngsters.

“We cannot go on like this. I’ve commissioned pressing recommendation on banning them.”

Former Justice Secretary Sir Robert Buckland also said: “I’m deeply involved by the rise of assaults on folks, pets and livestock by XL Bully dogs . The authorities ought to take motion and ban these dogs.”

The American Bully XL shouldn’t be topic to any authorized restrictions. But recommendation on banning the breed was commissioned final week, an adviser mentioned.

Adding dogs to the banned checklist is the accountability of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).

It is illegitimate to personal, breed or promote dogs on Defra’s banned checklist.

The canine shouldn’t be recognised as a selected breed by the UK Kennel Club, the UK’s largest organisation involved with canine well being, welfare and coaching.

A Defra spokesman mentioned: “We take canine assaults and anti-social behaviour very severely and are ensuring the total power of the legislation is being utilized.

“This can vary from lower-level Community Protection Notices – which require canine house owners to take acceptable motion to handle behaviour – to extra severe offences below the Dangerous Dogs Act, the place folks might be put in jail for as much as 14 years, be disqualified from possession or lead to harmful dogs being euthanised.”
