The move has come following a a massive hue and cry from the city residents. The previous order was issued on December 8. The revised order now states that a pet dog will be ‘seized’ by the civic body until it is claimed by its owner. The civic body will also claim ‘detention fee’ from the owner.
The MCG said it never meant to kill the pet dogs and that its order was misinterpreted, said a report in Times of India. The report also quoted an MCG official saying that the part of the order has been withdrawn.
The official said unregistered dogs will be detained at a facility and will be released only after their owners pay a penalty. Earlier, many courts have spelt out that animals too have a right to life.
Earlier, the city residents and pet owners have vehemently opposed the MCG notice calling it ‘illegal’. The December 10 notice had also mentioned that the owners must ensure that their pet dogs wear a collar.
Meanwhile, the MCG has also amended it form after the new changes. The civic body has also reportedly simplified the registration form like doing away with the requirement of mentioning the details of importer in case of a dog of foreign breed.
