A 64-year-old female punched a black bear in the face to safeguard her dog, a report says.
Lynn Kelly saw the bear chasing her dog in the woods behind her home in Porter, Maine, on Friday early morning
“I observed that my dog ran of the deck and directly down in front of your home down the hill,” Kelly informed WMUR 9.
“I heard him shriek, screeching. And so, I ran over to where he had actually decreased and kept calling him and calling him, and he lastly came running back up. And right behind him was the bear. And the bear took a look at me, and I took a look at the bear. I believe we both afraid each other.”
She said she attempted to shout to frighten the bear, however it did not work, so she turned to punching it in the snout.
“He was a foot taller than I was and coming at me. I attempted to make myself as huge as I might and was shouting and screaming,” she informed the outlet.
“I needed to battle him off since I wasn’t gonna range from him since I understand they can capture you. So I attempted to offer him a punch.”
The bear bit her in action, and Kelly needed to be required to medical facility to be dealt with for 4 leak injuries.
Mark Latti, representative for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said that it is not suggested to challenge bears, per the New York Post.
Latti said that it’s uncommon to be bitten by a bear in Maine, despite the fact that the state has among the biggest black bear populations on the eastern coast.
The bear was most likely provoked into assaulting after it was punched, the department said.
American black bears have to do with five to seven feet tall when standing upright. Adult males normally weigh in between 126–551 pound.
