PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — An eight-week-old puppy remains in extensive care after going through life-saving surgical treatment. Her body was so severely burned the vet was given tears.

We wish to caution you that a few of the information in this story might be troubling.

A pit bull mix that is hardly old sufficient to be far from her mother is combating to make it through after extreme burns cover 30% of her body.

The images are too graphic to reveal.

“This needs to be among the worst cases of abuse that I’ve ever seen, specifically on a dog so young,” Jessica Graaf said.

Graaf is with Philly Bully Team, a not-for-profit that assists in saving mistreated and ignored pit bulls in Philadelphia.

She says Bebe was brought into Art City Vets in Spring Garden Friday with holes in her skin and her backend and stomach were severely burned and contaminated.

“The burns are truly bad,” Graaf said. “They are removing the majority of her fur in the back and it’s been referred to as her skin is falling off by the veterinarian.”

Graaf informs CBS News Philadelphia Bebe’s owner declared he purchased the dog with the burns and surrendered her at the veterinarian stating he could not supply the correct care.

Bebe was moved to Penn Veterinary Hospital and went through surgical treatment Saturday early morning.

“The burns follow either a chemical or a thermal burn,” Graaf said. “It’s disastrous, I do not understand how somebody might do this or permit this to take place to another living animal.”

Graaf says Bebe is a fighter however with installing medical costs, Philly Bully Team is hoping the general public can assist with contributions to balance out the cost of her long healing.

“We’re requesting the neighborhood to come together and help Bebe truly defend her life and get the opportunity at life she hasn’t had yet,” Graaf said.

We’re informed Bebe will stay in extensive look after a minimum of another week and might require another surgical treatment.

Graaf says the veterinarian is still attempting to determine how the puppy was burned and if it was deliberate.
