A dog was stabbed in New York’s Central Park on Saturday following a “verbal dispute” in between dog owners, the New York City Police Department said.

The conflict began when a couple walking their 2 dogs experienced a man walking his 3 dogs in the park, NYPD Officer Antonio Antenucci informed CNN Monday.

The dogs started to combat, and there was a “verbal dispute” in between the owners as they attempted to separate them, he said. The man then supposedly took out a switchblade and stabbed among the couple’s dogs, he said.

No arrests have actually yet been made in connection with the event, Antenucci said.

The hurt dog was later on euthanized after a malignant mass was discovered throughout a subsequent ultrasound, the dog’s owner, Brian Cornwell, informed CNN.

Cornwell and his partner opted for a walk in the park after supper with their 2 dogs, Eli and Sadie, he said.

He said a mini pit bull ran over and attempted to bite Sadie, their six-pound mini pinscher. The pit bull’s owner, who had 2 other dogs with him, attempted informing the couple it was okay, and Cornwell reacted that it wasn’t.

“He didn’t like that I spoke up,” Cornwell informed CNN Monday.

The 2 males exchanged words prior to Cornwell said he attempted to de-escalate the circumstance. He and his partner started to walk away, however the man followed them, Cornwell said.

“All of a sudden he’s close to me,” Cornwell said. “He’s trying to hit me.”

The man had actually dropped the leashes for his 3 dogs and they were pursuing Sadie, Cornwell said.

When Cornwell’s partner chose Sadie up, the dogs started assaulting Eli, the couple’s 14-year-old pit bull-German Shepherd mix.

“I was trying to get these dogs off my dog,” Cornwell said. “I kicked one of his dogs right off.”

Cornwell said the man was attempting to strike him throughout the experience, and at one point, Cornwell pepper-sprayed the man however it didn’t appear to impact him.

During the battle, the 3 dogs’ leashes ended up being twisted around Eli’s neck and collar, according to Cornwell.

“(The man) was dragging my dog on the sidewalk in the park, trying to get the leashes and the dogs off my dog,” he said.

When the man secured a knife, appearing to try to cut one of the leashes, Eli grumbled and the man stabbed the dog, Cornwell said.

“My dog’s in a pile of blood.” Cornwell said. “I thought he was going to bleed out, there was so much blood.”

The man lastly collected his 3 dogs and left the scene prior to authorities showed up, according to Cornwell.

Cornwell took Eli to a neighboring animal healthcare facility, where vets discovered the malignant mass after an ultrasound. They approximated Eli would have about 5 months delegated live, according to Cornwell.

“I had to make the decision to euthanize him,” he said. “I didn’t want him to suffer.”

Cornwell said it was ravaging to lose Eli, who he rescued about ten years earlier.

“I have dog beds in every room and he’s not there,” he said. “He’s the best dog I’ve ever had.”
