A Detroit space man was being patted down by cops on suspicion of theft after they discovered a gray-furred puppy with shiny blue eyes zipped up in his pocket.
“I don’t think anybody at this department’s seen anything like it,” Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin told the Detroit Free Press.
The little pup, named Frappy, has since been returned to his partner-in-crime and police are not sure if Askin had the canine with him on the Jan. 16 heist.
Brian Askin, 24, is accused of stealing from a businessman who was doing a financial institution transaction at Comerica Bank, fleeing the scene with the stolen bag that contained $5,200.
He was discovered hours later with the canine in Detroit, “stunning” officers, Berlin stated.
“I think the puppy got to the station before the suspect did, from what I heard,” Berlin stated.
The chief stated his officers took “extreme care” of the lovely puppy, who’s a five-week-old feminine, and “kept it warm.”
The canine was later handed into animal management’s possession, the place the little canine was named Bandit, till they later realized Askin had named the canine Frappy.
As for Askin, Berlin stated, “It was a crime of opportunity.”
“He grabbed it and was off to the races,” he informed the Detroit Free Press.
Askin was charged with larceny and booked into county jail on a $20,000 bond.
He has seen bailed out and has paid his impound charge. He doesn’t face any animal neglect fees.
The alleged thief’s lawyer, Robbie Lang, believes the canine was bought a couple of days earlier than the crime and doesn’t imagine Frappy was with Askin through the theft.
The canine is just not believed to have been harmed through the shakedown and was returned to his proprietor on Tuesday, in accordance with Jeff Randazzo, Macomb County’s chief animal management officer.
Randazzo met with Askin after his launch to speak about caring for the puppy and provided to assist with vaccines and microchipping, the Detroit Free Press stated.
