I didn’t plan on getting a brand new cat after my beloved companion Juno handed away a number of months in the past on the age of probably-12. After all, she was with me for 9 years. That’s not the kind of grief you recover from in a short time. Besides, my home is very small and already comprises two people (common measurement) and two dogs (one massive, one medium.) Adding one other critter didn’t look like good engineering.

But life finds a means. (Yes, I’m quoting “Jurassic Park.”) In this case, my roommate’s ex received again in contact along with her. When they separated final winter, the ex stored their two cats. But a number of weeks in the past, she moved and her new house would solely permit her one cat. So she requested my roommate would she take the second cat, and my roommate requested me, and what was I going to do? Say no to a long-lost feline member of the family? Of course not.

Her identify is Ginger, which has lengthy been considered one of my little sister’s nicknames. Yes, I’ve been having means an excessive amount of enjoyable referring to Ginger the Cat versus Ginger the Human. Ginger is a non-indicative identify – she’s a tuxedo cat with little white fur-gloves on her paws (she is at all times the fanciest wearing the home). She’s about 5 years old and 5 kilos soaking moist.

Ginger is extra naturally timid and risk-averse than Juno was. She spent her first week in the home underneath my roommate’s mattress; the second week, she ventured on prime of it (very courageous!). I’ve mistaken a dropped sweater for Ginger greater than as soon as, together with making little kissy noises at it … for a number of minutes. (Coincidentally, I received new glasses lately.)

My dogs are thrilled. Possibly slightly too thrilled. Karma thinks Ginger is her new finest pal and doesn’t perceive why the kitty doesn’t need to play and wrestle along with her. It may need one thing to do with Ginger being barely even the scale of Karma’s head. (Talk about “Jurassic Park!”) Despite Karma’s in any other case loosey-goosey interpretation of “rules” and “boundaries,” she’s been fairly respectful of not stepping over the family Maginot Line, often known as the road the place the colour of carpet demarcating her room modifications. Janey, who remembers a time when she had free rein of the home, has slightly extra hassle with that boundary.

When push involves shove, Ginger’s a courageous little woman. On one event, the dogs by accident trapped Ginger in a nook. Ginger hissed and growled, which induced Janey – who understands cat communication – to bark, which induced Karma to be uncontrollably excited, pondering they had been all enjoying and making noise collectively. But the tiny cat by no means shrinks or backs down. She stands her floor (except a human scoops her up, which she additionally protests towards). And when she hears the dogs’ kibble hitting the bowl, she roars like a lion for her fair proportion. She’s loud for a critter whose lungs are most likely the scale of rooster nuggets.

For essentially the most half, when Ginger sees me coming nearer, she slips underneath the sofa or again into her sanctuary room. I assume it’s because every time I present up someplace in the home, Janey and Karma are scorching on my heels, as a result of God forbid I do something with out the dogs’ supervision.

But late at night time, when the remainder of the home (particularly the dogs) are asleep, we see one another as I step out into the darkness for a seltzer. The fridge mild will illuminate her eyes and white tux equipment. Her most popular methodology to obtain affection is the old “flop and retreat.” This is when a cat flops on the ground, displaying you some or all of their fluffy tummy. Then they allow you to pet them for not more than 5 seconds earlier than they rise up, walk a number of steps – simply far sufficient to be inconvenient – earlier than flopping once more and demanding pets. And after all, I’m a sucker, so I crawl round the lounge bending to her will till she will get bored with me, or till one of many dogs wakes up and realizes I’m not in mattress and shuffles in all bleary-eyed.

One night time final week, I used to be brushing my enamel after I heard a boring, regular sound that I heard almost daily for, oh, 9 years. The slip-thump-skitter of a cat leaping off the desk and working throughout the ground. It’s not a sound you’d ever suppose to overlook, till you hear it unexpectedly for the primary time shortly. And although she is a really totally different cat, and never even mine, in that second, I felt like my old pal Juno was again once more.
