SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A Springfield non-profit is taking trash and turning it into treasure for stray cats.
“They’re ferals and strays, but they’re dumped. It’s just sad they breed so quickly,” mentioned Sandra Skinner, native shelter volunteer.
She says her love for stray cats led her to adoption. “My cat that I adopted from them Marsha, she was shot in the back, and she’s paralyzed. Anyone else would have just left her to die but I’m just so thankful that she had an opportunity.”
The Watching Over Whiskers (WOW) organization has been making cat shelters for Springfield’s neighborhood for almost 10 years. Leaders with the non-profit say every shelter is $10.
Skinner says the shelters preserve stray’s secure and helps preserve the inhabitants down. “The TNR, trap neuter release, which controls, you know, tries to control as much as we can the population of the ferals or the streets that are outside. Then with Watching Over Whiskers they take cats in and get them vetted.”
Each yr the organization makes and sells between 400-500 warming shelters.
“Think about the cold temperatures we’re getting ready to have here in our market. It’s cold, so you wouldn’t want to be sleeping outside in the open, and neither would they. These shelters are styrofoam, they’re straw, they’re diatomaceous earth, its food grade, there’s catnip in there, and so they’re nice and insulated,” mentioned Marci Bowling, Executive Director of WOW.
Although the shelters are vital to stray’s, leaders with WOW say it’s additionally vital the place you place them.
“You don’t want them just on the ground. So, if you have a way to elevate them off of the ground safely, so it’s flat. Think about the rain, the snow, everything getting in them would drift up to a few inches. So, we encourage people to get a platform,” mentioned Bowling.
