Some uncommon residents cohabit with the inmates on the Santiago Sur Criminal Detention Center, in Santiago, Chile. Nearly 300 cats, together with Carlos Nuñez’s cat Feita (“ugly” in Spanish), pictured above, stay alongside the 5,600 inmates on the penitentiary.
The cats had been launched to handle the rodent inhabitants. But with out veterinary providers, particularly sterilization, the cat inhabitants skyrocketed, with many struggling sickness and early dying—inflicting inmates misery. This previous 12 months, Humane Society International partnered with the Chilean charity Fundación Felinnos to offer much-needed medical and spay and neutering providers to the jail’s cats.
“Prison cat programs help both pets and people, having a profound impact on the health and well-being of prisoners, cats, administrators, and society at large,” says
Katherine Polak, Humane Society International’s vice chairman of companion animals and engagement. “Inmates who interact with cats while in prison are less likely to reoffend.”
