Tilly, a kitten that was found terribly hurt on July 23, 2023 at 10 weeks old, is recuperating at the BC SPCA in Quesnel. The animal centre is looking for contributions, as it approximates the overall cost of the animal’s medical journey will be around $4,100. (BC SPCA North Cariboo)
Nearly one month after a little kitten with a huge infection was found in Quesnel, the North Cariboo BC SPCA is looking for contributions to support the animal’s significant medical journey.
Tilly the small black cat was simply 10 weeks old when a Good Samaritan identified her along the coast of Dragon Lake on July 23, according to Colby O’Flynn, the centre’s senior supervisor.
In a declaration provided Monday, O’Flynn explained that a female who lives near the lake saw Tilly from her bed room window and after that she and her other half coaxed the kitten out from under a boat dock with some food. Because Tily was covered in bugs, the couple covered her up in a blanket and brought her into the BC SPCA.
“The first thing we noticed, even before we brought her out of the carrier, was the smell of infection,” says O’Flynn. “She was cold, pale, dehydrated and barely able to lift her little head.”
Tilly needed immediate intervention, according to the release, and was driven to an emergency situation vet 90 minutes away for evaluation.
A big injury, which the BC SPCA thinks arised from an exchange with a predator, was found on the kitten after she was shaved.
For the very first couple of days after Tilly was rescued, the declaration discusses that she wasn’t steady enough for surgical treatment, and it wasn’t possible to close her injury due to an absence of tissue and a surplus of swelling and infection.
Eventually, the kitten went through surgical treatment and is recovery well—although she will need more surgical treatment in the future.
On top of the contaminated injury, Tilly’s tail was terribly hurt and will be cut off when the kitten is made sterile in the coming weeks.
If her treatments go as prepared, O’Flynn price quotes Tilly’s treatment overall will be around $4,100.
The BC SPCA says Pesecure Pet Health Insurance was so moved by the kitten’s story that it’s provided to compare to $3,000 in contributions towards Tilly’s care.
“Tilly was tiny, terrified and weak, yet she somehow managed to pick herself up and find help,” says O’Flynn. “Right now, she is on medication to make her comfortable, so we have not had the chance to see her fun and playful side yet, but we have all fallen in love with the affectionate little love-bug.”
Tilly is anticipated to be available for adoption at some point in early September.
