Hundreds flocked to Bruce Park Sunday morning for the YWCA Greenwich’s Walk the Walk Against Domestic Violence. The occasion attracted all ages, teams of mates, household and colleagues alike, many with their pets.

After a number of days of rain, everybody loved the sunshine and a change to lift consciousness and funds for YWCA Greenwich Domestic Abuse Services and schooling.

Domestic violence is prevalent in each group and impacts all individuals no matter age, socio-economic standing, sexual orientation, gender, race, faith, or nationality.

Nationally, one in 4 girls and one in seven males will expertise some type of home violence of their lifetime.

Dr. Elizabeth Lynch, DVM, shared details about Pet Partners, a program that includes remedy animals into bodily remedy, occupational remedy, speech remedy and different rehabilitation packages. Pet Partners is the premiere remedy animal program. (More info at PetPartners.org)

Dr. Lynch mentioned initially Pet Partners received began as The Delta Society within the Seventies. She mentioned whereas there are a lot of advantages to having pets has many advantages, 97% of home violence victims contemplate their pets when deciding to go away. In truth, she mentioned, 75% of victims keep due to their pets.

“Pets can be a great support for people,” Lynch mentioned. “That’s why there is a movement for ’25 by 2025,’ which is short for getting 25% of domestic violence shelters to be pet friendly by 2025.”

She mentioned Purina’s Purple Leash Project is main the way in which, with the purpose of victims not being trapped in abuse as a result of they will’t take their complete household with them to a shelter.

Lynch mentioned the shelter on the YWCA will board dogs at Greenwich Animal Control who this 12 months are receiving the YWCA’s award in recognition of this collaboration.

“There is federal funding to retrofit shelters to accept pets,” Lynch mentioned. “There is a lot of support, including from companies like Purina and PetSmart, because this is such a challenge.”

Lynch famous that on Tuesday, October 17 from 12:00 to 1:30pm, the YWCA is internet hosting entitled, “People Pets and Abuse: the Healing Connection.

The women from Troop 23, below the steering of Cindy DiPreta, met Suzy Meth and a kitten rescued by her rescue organization Saving Belladonna. Ms Meth mentioned her organization does kitten and cat avenue rescue. They are at all times in search of volunteers together with adopters, fosters, drivers and donors.

Ms DiPreta mentioned this 12 months an all women Troop 23 from Boy Scouts of America spun off from husband Rich DiPreta’s Troop 5.

Both troops are linked with sponsor Sound Beach Volunteer Fire Dept and are open to girls and boys in grades 6-12.
