(CNN) – There may be a brand-new non-surgical method to help suppress populations of feral cats.

A brand-new research study released Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications reported that lasting contraceptive injections are revealing pledge to keep cats from getting pregnant.

Dr. Bill Swanson, a director at The Cincinnati Zoo, led the research study.

He says 6 cats were injected with a gene that impacts a hormonal agent in ovarian roots.

Two years later on, scientists discovered that the shot was still working, and none of the cats in the group conceived after a number of male cats were presented.

The treatment is less invasive than making sterile and sterilizing, however it might be years prior to the injection gets last approval.

There are an approximated 600 million domestic cats on the planet, and 80% of them are feral or strays.
