The public is being requested to not method Charlie, the Capuchin monkey who escaped from Monkey Sanctuary Ireland in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow earlier this month.

“He won’t attack unless you try and pick him up,” William Heffernan, the top of Monkey Sanctuary Ireland, informed The Irish Times.

“He’ll chew you, he’ll nip you, he’s like a feral cat.

“He’s not a pet, he’s by no means been petted so he’s not used to that.

“I might put meals in a pulley bucket and I’ll wheel it overhead to the island, that’s the one contact [he has]. And cleansing out and if he wants any veterinary care.”

Heffernan mentioned Charlie escaped from his island within the Sanctuary through a fallen tree when workers had been making an attempt to relocate him and one other monkey.

The Dublin native mentioned he believes Charlie would probably be present in wooded areas however is worried that the monkey may very well be “killed crossing the highway.”

Heffernan informed Irish radio station KFM on Friday that Charlie is “fully away from any viruses.”

He added: “He’s solely the scale of a small cat, so he’s fairly innocent. But he’s not a pet.”

Monkey Sanctuary Ireland says it’s the nation’s “first and solely sanctuary for undesirable primates.” It’s fully volunteer-run and isn’t open to the general public.

Most of the monkeys that stay at Monkey Sanctuary Ireland had been rescued from laboratories or circuses.

The Sanctuary says: “Rehabilitating Capuchins into such naturalistic environment is uncommon and so essential for studying about their behaviour every day.

“Although native to South America the monkeys do not appear to thoughts the cooler Irish local weather – they even performed within the snow one winter.

“The monkeys have insulated homes on every island with warmth lamps (on 24 hours a day in Winter!) and radios enjoying soothing classical music.”

The monkeys have a number of firm on the Sanctuary which can be a refuge for goats, emus, pot-bellied pigs, parrots, peacocks, cats, and pigeons.
