Deming netters held off a feisty Hatch Valley High Bears varsity volleyball group with a three-game sweep on Saturday at Frank Dooley Court on the campus of Deming High School.
Hatch Valley (6-9) put strain on the Lady ‘Cats by way of the primary two video games, earlier than bowing down 25-23 and 26-24. The women took full management within the third sport, 25-12, to publish the match win.
“Sometimes we have the tendency to play to the level of our opponents. I think that was the case in the first two games,” stated DHS Head Coach Samantha Flores. “Our girls made the necessary adjustments at the net and they were able to finish what they started.”
Hatch was led by freshman Sophia Thompson who put down eight kills to guide all hitters.
The first two video games have been a see-saw battle with every group pulling in entrance by not more than 4 factors.
Deming (3-10) surged forward from a 23-21 deficit behind a robust service run by senior Amanda Santistevan to publish the 25-23 game-one win.
Game two was prolonged past the 25-point restrict. Deming relied on two service runs — this time by seniors Kristen Garcia and Mariana Mendez — to go up 2-0 by a 26-24 depend.
“We talked about not letting the skill level of our opponents dictate the way we play,” Flores informed the Headlight. “The girls realized that in game three and established their own level of play.”
Mendez has made good use of her time since returning to the beginning entrance line. Mendez was injured again on Sept. 9 and sidelined for 10 days.
Mendez was an offensive weapon, peppering the Bears for seven kills to guide the Lady ‘Cats.
Senior Brizella Baeza had 4 kills and juniors Daisy Blanco and Tabitha Wilderman every collected three kills.
“I feel like we played well, but we could have done better,” stated Amanda Santistevan, senior setter. “The first two games were a lot closer than they should have been. We definitely played a lot better in the third game to win the match.”
Santistevan was stored busy on the entrance line. She distributed 17 assists to 5 completely different hitters.
“Our energy had a lot to do with pulling out this win,” Santistevan stated. “We didn’t let the score get us down. We just kept getting the ball over and played to win.”
Santistevan is a vocal chief on the ground, calling out free balls and discovering the assured hitters.
“As coaches, we can see the progress the girls are making in practice each week. We tell the girls our fans deserve to see the progress also, and I think they are headed in that direction,” Flores stated.
The Lady ‘Cats performed Cobre at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in entrance of the home crowd at DHS. Cobre swept the Lady ‘Cats per week in the past in Bayard, 25-6, 25-20 and 25-20.
