PEORIA (25News Now) – Animal lovers gathered to raise funds for Peoria’s Humane Society, as shelters report there aren’t enough adopts happening.
This is the 10th Wine and Whiskers fundraiser, one of the biggest fundraising events for the Humane Society, which partners with the county and city for animal welfare and control. Education Coordinator Kitty Yanko said the group is entirely donor-funded.
Guests who purchased the $50 ticket saw wine tastings, a silent auction, live music, wine pulls, and raffles.
The “whiskers” portion of the event came in the form of adoptable kittens, who snoozed during some parts of the event.
25News spoke with other shelters and rescues earlier in April. They reported a drop in adoptions and a rise in the cost of food, supplies, and veterinary care.
“We get calls all the time from pet owners that have an emergency and they can’t afford their pet,” Yanko said. “Of course, we support the animals so we give them the care we need. That’s what that money goes to help.”
The Peoria Humane Society has an ongoing wishlist of items needed on Amazon. In a Facebook post Wednesday, they called for cat litter donations. On their website, they list 32 cats ready for adoption and 12 dogs.
