GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla. — Two kittens were discovered abandoned and discarded on the side of the roadway in a tied-off plastic bag Wednesday at the crossway of Immokalee Road and Wilson Boulevard in Golden Gate Estates.
“There’s predators out there. There’s cars, bears, foxes, dogs…I don’t know if they ever would’ve lasted much longer,” said Mary Heend, a cat foster parent who took in the animals.
It is unidentified at this time who left the two-week-old animals on the curb, in addition to for how long they were caught prior to a passerby discovered them and called Collier County Domestic Animal Services.
The kittens had no food or water and were caught as temperature levels rounded into the low 90s throughout the height of the afternoon.
“We don’t know (who did this) and we probably will never know, but we’re happy we got them back,” said Heend.
At very first discovery, both kittens were unresponsive.
“We feared the worst…heat stroke, brain damage…we didn’t know what they had gone through,” said Heend.
The kittens had no physical damage that would provide a sign of previous abuse.
“That’s cruelty. I run into it every day. I don’t know why this happens, but it does. There are so many better options if you can’t take care of an animal anymore,” said Tom Kepp, who runs SNIP Collier.
Thomas and Brandy, the 2 kittens, are now recuperating at a foster home in North Naples. As long as their condition continues to enhance, they must be available for adoption in about 8 weeks.
