A kitten was rescued in the nick of time after getting his head wedged in a disposed of mayo container.

Volunteers from the Northumbria Branch of Cats Protection were checking out a garden in Ashington, Northumberland, following reports of a litter of feral kittens in the location. Within minutes of being at the website, the owner notified them to a one of the kittens concealed behind a piece of wood with his head jammed in a glass container.

Branch Co-ordinator Sascha Dean said: “After hurrying to see the kitten, I at first feared he was already dead due to the fact that he was lying flat and felt cool to the touch.

“But after utilizing a great deal of cooking oil and gradually working his go out of the container, the air lock he’d produced broke. Once totally free, he started moving and all of us felt such relief.

“By the time we got him to the vet he was in a fairly feisty mood. We were concerned that he had been injured while trying to break free but luckily there was no damage. It was estimated that he was no more than six weeks old.”

Given the apt name Mayo, he was brought into the care of the branch, while his brother or sisters, who were discovered close by, were confessed to another regional rescue charity.
