A new child star in our cosmic yard is being circled by an uncommon, cat-like tail of gasoline and dirt, new photographs from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveal. And the unusual construction is proving to be very laborious to elucidate, new analysis reveals.

The star, named Beta Pictoris, is a young, solarlike star positioned round 63 light-years from the photo voltaic system, making it one in all our closest neighbors. (The closest star to the solar, Proxima Centauri, is simply 4 light-years away, for comparability). It was first found in 1984 and has been closely studied ever since. Past observations have revealed that Beta Pictoris is lower than 20 million years old, which may be very young for a star.
