OCEANA COUNTY, MI – Melissa Lakies didn’t wish to go all 4 days of the Electric Forest music celebration without seeing her precious cat, Oscar.
So, she brought him with her – sort of.
Lakies printed out a huge cardboard cutout of her cat’s face and stuck it on top of a 5-foot totem. She brought it around any place she went throughout the celebration that started June 22 in Rothbury and ended Sunday.
She became part of a group of about 10 pals who did the exact same, bring huge totems with the faces of their precious animals throughout the celebration.
It was an enjoyable method for the group to match with one another, while likewise getting to flaunt their cute fluffy pals, Lakies said.
“My friends and I all made totems of our pets to bring them with us, because it’s a long week without them,” said Lakies, from the Traverse City location. “We just kind of went for it, and they seemed to work out pretty well.”
At Electric Forest, totems are a vital part of the celebration’s culture, acting as a form of expression, imagination and enjoyable.
“Totem poles allow people to express themselves, share joy, make people laugh,” said guest Brian Tai, of Denver, Colorado, on Friday, June 24.
Festivalgoers develop special and funny concepts for their totems, which they bring around throughout the celebration as a method to communicate a message, rally a group or merely for enjoyable. The totems generally balance around 5 five high.
This year, Tai chose to bring a concept to life that he’d been considering for several years: A Super Nintotem (a play on the word Super Nintendo). He connected a display to a huge tube and established a mini Super Nintendo video gaming system where users can play computer game on the go.
“Truth is, I’ve had this idea for years,” Tai said. “You’re just in the crowd, and you’re like, ‘Man, it would be really great if we could play some Streetfighter, a little Mario Kart, little Tetris, something.’”
The Super Nintotem took about 3 days to make, Tai said. He initially brought it with him to the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) music celebration in Las Vegas last month, and made a couple of small tweaks prior to bringing the totem to Electric Forest.
“Coming out of EDC there were some enhancements: Stronger mounts, bigger monitor, wheels,’” he said.
Tai runs an Instagram account, called Super Nintotem, where he publishes images of all the complete strangers who play the video gaming system throughout the music celebration.
Totems have actually been popular at celebrations for several years, however numerous occasions have actually prohibited the innovative pieces since they can obstruct the audience’s view of the phase.
That’s not the case at Electric Forest, the music celebration that draws individuals from all over the nation to the rural Village of Rothbury in Oceana County.
